When you arrive for your first appointment, your neurophysiotherapist will spend time getting to know you and understanding your condition. The session usually begins with a detailed conversation about your medical history, current symptoms, daily challenges, and personal goals. This helps us understand how your condition is affecting your life and what you want to achieve through therapy.
Next, your physiotherapist will complete a physical assessment. Depending on your needs, this may include:
· Checking your balance and walking pattern
· Assessing strength, flexibility, and coordination
· Looking at how your eyes, ears, and body work together to keep you steady
· Identifying any falls risks or safety concerns
From this assessment, we will work with you to set clear, realistic goals. You will be introduced to exercises or strategies tailored to your needs, and in many cases you will leave with a simple home program to start straight away.
Your physiotherapist will also explain the plan for future sessions, how often you may need to attend, what progress usually looks like, and how your program can be adapted as you improve. If appropriate, funding options such as NDIS, Medicare plans, or third-party supports can also be discussed.
Most importantly, your first visit is about helping you feel comfortable, listened to, and confident that you are in the right place to begin your rehabilitation journey.
